Many clients arrive with a photo saved from social media and ask for the same brows. The trouble is that a beautiful result on someone else’s skin does not always mean the same technique suits yours.
Jacqueline Bautista, a Licensed Esthetician and PMU Master Artist & Educator with more than 12 years specializing in eyebrows, explains how microblading and powder brows differ, and how she helps clients choose at our Round Rock studio.
The short answer:
Microblading creates individual hair-like strokes for a subtle, natural enhancement.
Powder Brows use a machine to create a soft, shaded look, similar to filling in your brows with makeup.
Oily skin: Jacqueline usually recommends Powder Brows.
Dry skin: Microblading can work beautifully.
Normal skin: Both can work well, depending on your natural brow hair and the look you want.

What Is Microblading?
Microblading creates individual hair-like strokes to imitate natural eyebrow hairs. It is a good fit for clients who want a very subtle enhancement and who have relatively healthy skin. Learn more about Microblading.
What Are Powder Brows?
Powder Brows, also called Ombré Brows, use a machine to create a soft, shaded effect, like filling in your brows with makeup. The front can stay very soft while the tails have more definition. They are versatile and can be customized to look soft and natural rather than heavy or dramatic. Learn more about Powder and Ombré Brows.
The Main Difference
The biggest difference is how the pigment is placed and how the finished result looks and ages over time.
Which Is Better for Your Skin Type?
Which Technique Suits Your Skin?
Oily skin: Jacqueline usually recommends Powder Brows, because individual microblading strokes can spread, blur or fade unevenly as oily skin heals.
Dry skin: Microblading can work beautifully, because individual strokes often keep their definition better.
Normal skin: Both techniques can work well. The choice depends on your natural eyebrow hair, your skin condition and the look you want.
Who May Not Be a Good Candidate?
Microblading is generally not recommended for very oily skin, large pores in the brow area, extremely thin or fragile skin, or significant existing brow tattoo pigment.
Powder Brows suit most skin types, but clients with heavily saturated old tattoos may need pigment lightening or removal before a new design.
All clients are screened. Pregnancy, active skin infections, certain inflammatory conditions, a history of keloid scarring, or conditions and medications that affect healing may mean we postpone treatment or ask for medical clearance.
What About Combination Brows?
Combination Brows pair the natural hair strokes of microblading in the front with soft shading through the body and tail. They are a good option for sparse brows when you want both texture and density.
They are not automatically right for everyone, because the microblading part still needs a suitable skin type. Learn more about Combination Brows.
Healing and Results
What the Healing Process Looks Like
Both techniques go through similar stages:
Stage / What to expect
First few days
Brows look darker and more defined than the final result
First week
Light flaking or peeling may occur. Never pick at the healing skin
Around days 10 to 20
Surface healing progresses, and the color may look temporarily much lighter
Weeks 4 to 6
Color settles, so the healed result can be evaluated
Do not judge your brows right after the appointment. Healing and pigment retention vary from client to client.
Touch-Ups
Jacqueline evaluates the healed result about 6 to 8 weeks after the first appointment. Some clients need small adjustments to color, shape or pigment density.
After that, maintenance depends on how your brows fade. Microblading often needs attention sooner, and Powder Brows typically need it less often. Jacqueline prefers to evaluate the brows themselves rather than automatically adding pigment every year.
Aftercare: Three Rules That Matter Most
Do not pick, scratch or peel your brows while they heal.
Avoid direct sun, pools, saunas and heavy sweating during the early healing period.
Follow the cleansing and ointment instructions you receive, and keep makeup and unapproved skincare off the healing brows.
Good aftercare supports both skin recovery and pigment retention.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
How Jacqueline Helps You Choose
Plan on about 3 to 4 hours for an eyebrow appointment. That includes your consultation, eyebrow mapping, pigment color selection, skin preparation and the procedure. Jacqueline does not start pigmenting until you have seen and approved your eyebrow shape.
At the consultation she first asks whether this is your first brow procedure or whether you have old tattoo pigment. Then she looks at your natural brow hair, skin type and condition, any existing pigment, your facial features and the result you want.
For example, a client may ask for microblading because she wants natural-looking brows. If she has very oily skin, Jacqueline explains that Powder Brows may give a softer, more predictable healed result. If someone has dark, saturated brow tattoos, she explains why lightening, removal or correction may come first. See Eyebrow Tattoo Correction.
She would rather recommend the right technique than perform one only because it was requested.
Common Myths
“Powder Brows always look dark or artificial.”
Not true. With the right shape, color and pigment density, they can look very soft and natural.
“Microblading is right for everyone.”
Not true. Skin type strongly affects how microblading heals and ages.
“You can always cover an old brow tattoo with new pigment.”
Not true. Sometimes the best first step is to lighten or remove the existing pigment.
“Permanent makeup never changes color.”
Pigment can fade and shift over time. Quality pigments, proper technique, skin assessment, sun protection and appropriate maintenance all matter, and no artist should promise that pigment will never change.
A Note From Jacqueline
One of the biggest mistakes clients make is choosing a technique based only on pictures they see on social media. A beautiful result on someone else’s skin does not necessarily mean the same technique is right for you.
At By Bautis Spa, beautiful brows are not only about how they look on day one. They are also about how they heal, how they age and how well the technique suits your natural features.
The right technique is not always the most popular one. It is the one that works best for your skin. You can have beautiful, natural-looking brows without following trends.
FAQ
Is microblading or powder brows better for oily skin?
Jacqueline usually recommends Powder Brows for oily skin, because microblading strokes can blur or fade unevenly as the skin heals.
Is microblading better for dry skin?
It often can be. Individual strokes tend to keep their definition well on dry skin, but your natural brow hair and skin condition are checked first.
How long do microblading and powder brows last?
Microblading often lasts around 6 to 12 months before maintenance. Powder Brows can stay visible for approximately 2 to 4 years, though maintenance may be needed earlier. Results vary from person to person.
When is the first touch-up?
About 6 to 8 weeks after your first appointment, when the healed result is evaluated.
How long does the appointment take?
About 3 to 4 hours for an eyebrow appointment.
Can I get new brows over an old brow tattoo?
Not always. If the old pigment is dark or saturated, lightening, removal or correction may be needed first.
How do I choose between microblading, powder brows and combination brows?
Book a consultation. Jacqueline looks at your skin, natural brow hair, existing pigment and goals, then recommends the technique that fits.
